Josef Müller-Brockmann (1914–1996), a Swiss graphic designer with an education in design, architecture, and illustration, is also known for his work as a professor and author. Influenced by several art movements like constructivism, the Bauhaus, and De Stijl, he was an early participant in Swiss Design Style. Swiss Design Style, also known as International Typographic Style prioritized readability, clarity, and minimalism. His work is widely admired for his practices in rigid frameworks with grid structures, which he helped popularize internationally.

Originally published in 1981, Grid Systems in Graphic Design acts as a guide for the variety and proper usage of grid systems in layout design. This concept is designed to help create structure and balance, which reflects the objective of Swiss Design Style. Using illustrations and photos, the book visually showcases the array of grid structures, from eight to thirty-two grid fields and three-dimensional grids.

Along with the layout, the book cover was designed by Müller-Brockmann, which displays the two titles (English and German), author name, and publisher within a grid of 32 fields.

English translation was provided by D.Q. Stephenson and published in 1996.
