Designing Books: Practice and Theory, Reprint

20

Originally published in 1996, Designing Books: Practice and Theory written by Swiss graphic designer Jost Hochuli (1933–) and co-written by designer and critic Robin Kinross (1949–) introduces book design with an open approach. Basic concepts and theories of designing books are discussed, as well as how to appropriately apply them. Illustrations are used to show various layout design examples, covering compositions that are text-focused, devoid of text, and layouts with both text and visual elements. In this 2003 reprint, Jost Hochuli’s own work involved with book designing are included towards the end with commentary from Robin Kinross concluding the book.

Hochuli was the book designer of Designing Books: Practice and Theory, and fonts Monotype Baskerville in regular and italic and Univers 75 Black were used. It was constructed using ota binding, a method that uses thermal adhesive to bind the pages and cover together, done by Binderij Hexspoor in Boxtel, NL.
