Graphic Design: A New History

Stephen J. Eskilson's book, Graphic Design: A New History, explores the journey of graphic design by starting from its origin (early 19th century) to where graphic design is represented in today's day and age. This book takes you in to learn the dynamics between design and manufacturing and how these two concepts share a relationship with technology and social change over the course of history. Over 450 illustrations are presented in the book, including the works of the brothers Georgia Stenberg (1900-1933) and Vladmir Stenberg (1899-1982). The Stenberg brothers designed a poster for the German film High Society Wager in 1923 which is about a wealthy couple who become involved with gambling. The main focus of the poster are the characters going up a spiral staircase that serves as a metaphor for “climbing the social ladder,” but that staircase ultimately leads to their unfortunate downfall. The artwork on the back cover is displayed with the word “Pap” and incorporates elements of traditional Japanse characteristics with the lettering.
