No More Rules: Graphic Design and Postmodernism

20

The book No More Rules: Graphic Design and Postmodernism is written by English writer Rick Poyner who focuses on writing about design, graphic design, typography, and visual culture. This book features different components such as pooular movements and key designers that strained away from traditional rules and conventions during the late 20th century. The book cover reflects the playfulness and unconventionality of post modern design which relates to the designs discussed about in the book. The typogaphy uses different types of typefaces such as bold, blocky san-serif  in black and blue lettering. The title and the author's name is arranged unconventionally, but still proportionate. No More Rules and Rick Poynor is highlighted in blue and graphic design and postmodernism is highlighted in black (almost look like they are being sandwhiched). The background feautures red, white, and yellow to create depth but also a chaotic feel when you look at it.  One of the pieces in this book is listed in chapter 2: Deconstruction and is an album cover designed by Jamie Reid called God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols, 1977. This design features the Queen Elizabeth II face with rough strips torn across her eyes and mouth which is replaced with the God Save the Queen (title of the song) and Sex Pistols (band name) in cut up "newspaper" lettering.
