These advertisement posters for Yale School of Architecture by Michael Bierut are simplistic yet intricate. They are dated from 2000, 2002, and 2003, respectively in order of appearance. The first two posters were contributed to by another artist named Kerrie Powell.
All three posters advertise current lectures taking place, but in an interesting way. The first poster contains the lecture names and times within the arrows, the second poster names lectures both really largely and small, and the third features many large and bold Y's (for Yale) with the lecture names featured very small on the bottom. The posters are completely black and white, but the contrast present is strong, effectively catching the eye.
Michael Bierut is a graphic designer, teacher, and design critic who studied at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning. He has been in partnership with his design firm, Pentagram, since 1990.
These posters are quite simple but still interesting due to their somewhat unusual nature. The arrows of the first poster direct our eyes across it, the sideways text keeps us looking longer at the second poster, and the giant Y's of the third poster compel us to find out what they're representing. These posters play into the new art era of the 2000s by slightly pushing that modern and experimental boundary.
