This stunning and detailed illustration used on the book cover is Elizabeth Catlett's Sharecropper, created in 1952, and printed in 1970. This illustration was created from linoleum cut board and printed on Japanese paper.
Elizabeth Catlett is a well known American and Mexican sculptor and graphic artist. The book jacket designers, Leah Lococo and Kathleen M. Lynch, make this art piece outstanding and imposing by using bold and italic, 2 types of contrasted typefaces, and black color for the background. Leah Lococo and Kathleen M. Lynch decided to use this artwork, not only because the illustration is about a portrait of an African-American as a sharecropper, but also because the illustration explains and symbolizes Elizabeth Catlett, who used her art to spread the awareness of Black-American women's life, culture, and history.
This book explained African-American history with different aspects: stories, experiences, highs and lows, etc. in an analytic and narrative way.
