Bosch Spark Plug Poster

20

Lucian Bernhard’s 1914 Bosch spark plug poster is a defining example of the Sachplakat (object poster) movement, a design philosophy that prioritized simplicity and direct communication. Unlike the dense, text-heavy advertisements of the time, his work proved that a product could stand on its own as the central message. The Bosch poster wasn’t just visually appealing - it was functional, communicating reliability, innovation, and brand identity in an instant.

The poster presents a single, clearly defined image—a spark plug—against a striking orange (bright red in some variations) background, with a blue-bordered Bosch logo anchoring the design. A bright burst of energy emanates from the plug, reinforcing its function without the need for additional explanation. The typography is clean, thick, and easily recognizable, ensuring immediate brand association.
