Arkangel for Animal Liberation

Arkangel for Animal Liberation is a British bi-annual magazine. This was their first publication in the winter of 1989. Ronnie Lee, the founder of the Animal Liberation Front, gave the idea for this publication. The magazine was a way to make the animal rights movement more recognizable and organized since there was a mixture of underground and mainstream efforts for the movement altogether. While Ronnie Lee was imprisoned, he received endless support and letters about the movement while he could not physically act further for the movements, he could send in the letters to continue the support and momentum of the movement. Vivien Smith received these letters from him and put them all together as the editor of the newly found Arkangel magazine, which was printed by Aldgate Press.

Arkangel magazine included various photographs from different events and goals and many illustrations. Plenty of the illustrations are logo-style illustrations over different marks that multiple groups from the movements used. These had a lot of variety overall from showing posters, animal sanctuary branding, and sticker-type illustrations, each having a different meaning or submovement included. The most common of these submovements are the push for vegan or vegetarianism, end fishing, end hunting, etc. The cover art, illustrated by Anthony Lee, is also illustrated with the imagery of an angel with doves holding the animals that they care about, including dogs, cats, foxes, and bunnies. The borders and typography are also very decorative and angelic in a way, almost as if it is representative of a sacred text.

The magazine was not just sold in Britain, especially because the animal rights movement stretched far beyond Europe. It had a far larger reach and was sold internationally. Unfortunately, the Magazine was not very long-lasting, only being printed through 1999, though its impact remains with the ALF taking flight in Britain to better the lives of endless animals.
