Graphic Design 87, 1982

This is the cover design of Graphic Design 87 magazine by Ikko Tanaka circa September, 1982. This line of graphic design magazines with covers designed by Tanaka were issued in volumes, with the first volume dating back to 1959, and the final to 1983, as far as I could find. Graphic Design magazine was a popular graphic design vault on paper, focusing on both Japanese and international design.

Tanaka was a renowned Japanese graphic designer who had other famous designers within his clientele, including Issey Miyake, one of my favorite fashion designers. He was born in 1930 in Nara City and graduated from the Kyoto School of Fine Arts in 1950.

The color scheme and geometric nature of this cover designs plays into the iconic and vibrant aesthetic we associate with the 80s. Throughout Tanaka's work, he maintains his signature theme of blending playfulness and professionalism.
