Dungeons and Dragons Original Manuals

2

The Dungeons and Dragons manuals contribute a lot to design history as a whole with many different versions created and unreleased to the public. At first, they were considered very underground due to the fact that it was considered “evil” or “satanic” to own and play Dungeons and Dragons. A lot of why Dungeons and Dragons was believed to be considered “evil” was due to the 1970s-80s era known as the Satanic Panic. A lot of religious figures said that Dungeons and Dragons was evil and a wave of panic spread throughout the nation. Parents were throwing these manuals out of their house. It was such a wave of panic that people that played and owned Dungeons and Dragons manuals and such had to go into hiding and not tell other people that they were playing the game unless they faced a lot of ridicule from the culture around them. Now Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most popular and mainstream tabletop RPGs to have ever existed. The manuals consist of a variety of illustrations of characters that people can play as and monsters that you can encounter and fight. They also contain extensive rules that people can use to help create their personalized characters and world in Dungeons and Dragons. The first three manuals were released in a box set. The creator of Dungeons and Dragons is Gary Gygax. He has also created other tabletop RPGs but none have taken off as much as Dungeons and Dragons. The newer manuals are more complex than the originals with even more rules, monsters, races, classes, and lore that you can incorporate in your game. But even with all the new stuff that you can incorporate in your Dungeons and Dragons game, there is a charm that the original contained with the simpler design, typography, and underground nature it had during its lifespan.
