“'Homosexuals are Different…”'
Founded in 1950, The Mattachine Society was an early gay rights activism group based in Los Angeles. The piece featured is a filer depicting 2 striped “normal” zebras and 1 "different" spotted zebra. The striped zebras represent those who are “normal” or heterosexual while the spotted zebra represents those who are “different” or homosexual.
The New York faction of The Mattachine Society designed this poster in 1960 to prove they may be different but they are still human. Therefore, this means they deserve basic human rights. It can be seen as a promotional piece for other homosexuals to reach out and join the Society. The poster was made to show who they are, and what they believe in, and to promote their activism group to those who may want to join them.
