Remain in Light (Album Cover)

8

This is the cover of the 1980 album Remain In Light by the American rock band Talking Heads. It is one of the earliest album covers designed using a computer.

Originally, the front cover of the album was to feature a photo taken in the Himalayas of Gruman Avenger torpedo bomber planes in a pop-art inspired style. This image was meant to serve as a tribute to the band's bass player, Tina Weymouth whose father served in the US Navy during the second World War.  This design was designed by Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz with the help of media labs at MIT in a process that was much more difficult and time-consuming compared to modern methods due to the technology at the time.

The airplane design eventually switched to be the album's back cover and the back cover became the front cover. The final front cover, which features the four band members with red splotches over their faces, took inspiration from Weymouth's passion for masks. This design was made by graphic designer Tibor Kalman. Brian Eno, who produced and performed on the album was at one point considered for inclusion on the album cover but this idea was later discarded.

Complementing the images of the band is the band logo set in a bold font designed by Kalman and Weymouth which features inverted “A”s that contributes to the abstract and progressive style of the album's sound. Together with the album, the cover was seen as very progressive at the time of its release and has had a lasting legacy that influenced how album covers would be made from then on.
