The cover of ‘呐喊’ is simple and powerful, solemn and dignified, meaningful and unique in design. It is a rare classic in the history of book design in China and a model for the transition of new literary covers from traditional to modern forms. It has pioneering significance for modern book design. ‘呐喊’ was Lu Xun's first collection of short stories, first published in August 1923. The cover was designed by Lu Xun himself. The words ‘The Scream’ were typeset in lead type, but by the fourth edition in May 1926, they had been replaced by Lu Xun's handwritten artistic script.
