The monthly magazine New Women, a bestseller of the time that enjoyed great popularity among educated female readers in 1930s. The main theme of the covers Qian Juntao created for New Women was a highly decorative combination of simplified, deformed images of animals and plants or different geometric patterns. The overall color of the picture is simple, elegant and refined. Although there is not much detail, it produces a very rich and calm visual effect that is quite unique.Willows swaying in the breeze, purple martins flying; rain on the banana plants, dragonflies falling; the wind whistling, yellow flowers dancing.
Qian Juntao (1906-1998), a Jiaxing native, was a renowned seal engraver, calligrapher, and painter.
