Ye Qianyu (1907–1995) was a famous modern Chinese cartoonist, painter and art educator. In his early years, he was famous for his cartoon creations and participated in or edited the art work of various publications, including Shanghai Caricature, Time Pictorial and Cartoon World. After the founding of New China, he continued to be active in the art world, especially in the fields of figure painting (such as the dance figure series) and book and magazine binding design.Ye Qianyu was already known in the 1930s for his caricatures, Chinese paintings of dancing girls and magazine layouts, and this cover reflects his creative style at the time. The image of the “exotic dancer” on the cover of the inaugural issue of “清明” may well reflect Ye Qianyu's artistic distillation of subjects such as Indian dance and Dunhuang dance: the flowing ribbons of the dress and the graceful movements all highlight a sense of lightness and beauty.
