THE LOGO OF "PEKING UNIVERSITY-北京大学”

10

The Peking University logo was designed in 1917 by the famous Chinese scholar Lu Xun. He designed the Peking University emblem with the seal script “Peking University” at its core, combining traditional roof tiles with modern aesthetics to symbolize the responsibility of intellectuals and its simple contours give it a modern feel. The two seal characters “北大” are arranged vertically, with the upper character “北” being two human figures standing sideways with their backs to each other, and the lower character “大” being a human figure standing facing forward, as if one person is carrying two on their back, forming the image of “three people make a crowd” and giving the impression that “the people of Peking University shoulder the important task of enlightening the people.”

The Peking University emblem designed by Lu Xun was immediately adopted and remained in use until 1949. Due to historical circumstances, it was set aside for a considerable period before being used again in the 1980s. Lu Xun’s original design served as the basis for the updated Peking University emblem, which was officially unveiled in June 2007 along with the publication of the Visual Identity Recognition System Management Manual
