Resolved Problems
Resolved Problems is a piece done by Turkish artist Fahrelnissa Zeid in 1948, some time after she joined the D Group, a new wave of modern painters. According to New York University, the D Group considered themselves “the fourth generation of Turkish artists to work in a Western style,” and most of the members had studied the fine arts in both Turkey and Paris. This piece shows Zeid’s embrace of complete abstraction, and both Western and Eastern art influence.
Zeid was one of the first women to be enrolled in an arts institute in Istanbul, which was uncommon and difficult to do, especially in that time; her being from an elite, wealthy Ottoman family with parents who encouraged her interest in the arts made it much easier for her to achieve.
