This toy ship was designed by Alma Siedhoff-Buscher at the Bauhaus. It is made of wooden pieces using primary colors. The toy encourages learning, imitation, and creative play reflecting the same principles as Bauhaus of emphasizing functionality over only aesthetic appeal. Additionally, it uses primary colors and geometric forms which were also a clear example of the Bauhaus style.
Her work differences from later on gendered design in children’s materials by using the primary colors to reflect a neutral and inclusive approach to children’s toys rather than the pastel blue (boys) and pink (girls).
This piece contributes to the history of graphic design through the Bauhaus principles of form, color, and function which influenced visual communication and modernist design.
