Pages from The Complete Commercial Artist, Volume 15

The Complete Commercial Artist was the 24-volume publication on commercial design by the Association of Commercial Artists, a group of Japanese artists and designers. It served as a way to spread Japanese and Western reference materials to designers in Japan. Volume 15 focused explicitly on lettering, featuring work from Japanese designers who explored the simplistic geometric forms originated from Bauhaus designers such as Herbert Bayer and Josef Albers. In these images, the designers experiment with creating a modern Japanese typeface that strays from the traditional ornamental or calligraphic style and converses with Latin letterforms.
