The Treaty of Versailles, which required Germany to pay reparations for civilian damages following WWI, thrust Germany into an era of hardship defined by economic collapse and mass unemployment. Millions of desperate Germans — hungry, homeless, and fed up with the government’s inability to end the crisis — turned to the Nazi party, whose message spoke to their fears and promised a better future.
