This painting is a series that consisted of four murals for the branch library on 135th Street in Manhattan, produced by Aaron Douglas in 1934. The four panels show the African American experience. It begins with life in Africa and tracing the history of African Americans through slavery, emancipation, and rebirth of African traditions.
