The Monster at the End of this Book

1

This children's book was published in 1971 and has sold over 20 million copies. The meta story telling of Jon Stone and the intensely exciting illustrations by Michael Smollin create a reading experience like no other. Jon Stone, the books author, was an original producer of Sesame Street when it first aired and even helped with developing the characters and writing the first pilot. The book is such a powerful read because of how it taps in to our human nature. No matter how many times Grover pleads with us to not turn the page, we cannot resit the urge to keep reading. The illustrations by Michael Smollin are so bold, bright, and confronting. The typography on each page paints a clear picture of the emotions Grover is experiencing throughout the story. Smollin defined the art style of Sesame Street and continued to illustrate a multitude of Sesame Street books well into the 80s.
