The Doors of Perception at the Cow Palace 1969

9

On July 25, 1969, The Doors headlined a Bill Graham presentation at the Cow Palace, a significant venue just south of San Francisco. The graphic design for the 7.5"x4.75" handbill/mini poster was by Randy Tuten, who was in his early 20s and had just started working for Graham.

The piece shows stylistic flourishes relating to Japan and Art Nouveau. Its photographic source represents an earlier incarnation of the rapidly evolving band; they were at that moment touring for their psychedelic opus, The Soft Parade, behind a bearded Jim Morrison.

This merger of worlds was demonstrated in the last two tracks performed that evening: The Soft Parade, followed by Light My Fire.
