Phonograph Advertisement in the Chautauquan
This page from the Chautauquan magazine depicts an informational and commercial advertisement for Edison's Phonograph. The layout of this page follows typical trends of advertisements from the early 1900's where there is a large focus on text, but this advertisement in particular seems to equally favor the photograph of the machine, possibly as a response to scientific innovations. The ad claims that “Mr. Edison has perfected the phonograph” and that “it perfectly reproduces the human voice– just as loud– just as clear– just as sweet," which interestingly combines an almost pathos approach of advertising to this seemingly very concrete technological advancement.
