Wandering (1929) was a book created in collaboration between Tao Yuan‐qing (1893–1929) and Lu Xun (1883–1936), two influential figures in Chinese graphic design during the 1920s and 1930s. Tao Yuan‐qing was a Shanghai designer who drew inspiration from traditional motifs found in indigenous Chinese historic sources. Lu Xun was an author and artist knowledgable about Western art and design, with particular interest in German Expressionism and Käthe Kollwitz's woodcutting work. The blend of Western techniques with traditional Chinese motifs yielded a flat visual style characterized by limited color palette and woodblock shapes. This period of Chinese graphic design would become known as Shanghai Expression.
