Item: A special edition of Deadwing - an album by the British rock group Porcupine Tree. (2005)
The album "Deadwing" by Porcupine Tree came out in 2005. The band is known for going above and beyond with the production of their live shows and the physical albums that they sell. This limited edition version of "Deadwing" is a prime example of the work that goes into everything the band creates. It is a hard cover art-booklet and CD case put into one. It includes the audio CD and a DVD with live performances and other content. The booklet contains a series of collage-style images that include lyrics of songs throughout the album. In a way, it is the visual storytelling of the album. This is what makes this such a special piece of design: It combines music, art, and design and is a sellable product that stays true to itself. It is a step up from the base level product (the CD), including additional visual/musical content for the die hard Porcupine Tree fans. Holding it feels more substantial than the typical CD because of the choices that went into designing this product. It feels more like a small book than a CD case. As a true Porcupine Tree fan, I feel lucky to have this version of the album and to have gotten it signed by the band members.
