Lou Scheper Berkenkamp

May 15, 1901 - April 11, 1976

Germany

Being a student during the Bauhaus’ founding years, Berkenkamp studied under very influential members of the Bauhaus faculty. Workshopping in mural painting and stage, Berkenkamp was a very studious creative who desired to make dream worlds a visible reality. Berkenkamp was most known for her paintings, drawings, and collages. Although some of her works have shown geometric influence traditional to the Bauhaus, her inspired creatures and handmade typography illustrations makes her contributions to design unique. Majority of these fantasy works were crafted for publication of children’s books or as handmade letters for friends and family, but she also designed for literary text and, for the Bauhaus, their stage and color designs.

In 1934, Berkenkamp relocated to Berlin and joined the Professional Association of Visual Artists. Becoming a member of its board of directors, Berkenkamp went on to supervising  one their annual Great Berlin Art Exhibitions.

Berkenkamp’s illustrative poster of Luftpost für Freunde was created to promote airmail. A sense of motion is shown in the sky of arrows, creatures, and environment. Berkenkamp’s displayed work was the stepping stone towards her success of designing children’s books, inspired by her own children.
