1984 Folgers Automatic Drip Coffee Can

This can of automatic drip Folger’s coffee is from 1984. This version of the logo was introduced with the iconic jingle, “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!” While the company had been around for 134 years before that ad campaign, Folgers became the best selling coffee brand in the 1990’s because of the catchy jingle.

The logo on this can is very different from the original design. The first coffee to come from Folgers depicted a gold miner standing next to a shasta stream to represent San Francisco, California,  the city that the company was founded in. Since then, Folgers has expanded its reach past California, but not without forgetting its roots. The mountain near the top of this particular version of the logo is meant to be Mt. Shasta so the brand can stay true to its hometown.

This can of Folgers coffee is packaged in a tin can, but in 2003 the brand started to package their coffee in plastic. While some argue that tin is the best way to ensure that the coffee is not exposed to sun, Folgers says that the new material will be an overall improvement to their product because of the addition of a handle to the new jars and the fresh taste that they will preserve. Gone are the days of can openers in your coffee cans.
