Not only is this a heavily influential game for Sega's iconic mascot, but it was also a launch title for Sega's last mainstream console, the Dreamcast. While it's not the Hedgehog's actual first jump into the third-dimension, it was the most ambitious attempt yet to transition Sonic's high-speed platforming gameplay from 2D to full 3D! At its initial release, the game received high praise and went on to become the Dreamcast's best selling game of all time. Nowadays, the game has been seen in a harsh light due to it no longer living up to the standards of current game design. But despite that, the game is still highly cherished among fans and is still an important part of the series' legacy in thanks to its artwork, music, and setting the foundation for later 3D games.
This game also marks the first proper look of Sonic's modern redesign by artist, Yuji Uekawa. Having a background in graphic design, Uekawa looked to various artists for ideas on how to update Sonic for the modern era. Pulling from classic Disney designs to popular Japanese artists, Uekawa gave Sonic a sleek new look that is still used for the series to this day! Not only was the hedgehog now taller and skinner, but he also dawned green eyes as well. Sonic's friends and foes, new and old, were also designed by Uekawa too!
The game released in a standard jewel CD case, with a compact disc and a 17 page manual.
