Quill Pen and the Writer’s Desk
This piece is a jumble of sculptures outside the children's library titled "The Writers Desk," a 2005 work by Larry Kirkland and a tribute to former Charlotte Observer publisher Rolfe Neill who retired in 1997. During that time he was involved in nearly every achievement of the community and he is frequently referred to as the Patron Saint of the Arts. The committee chose to honor him with an artwork that will forever inform, challenge, and delight. Here are his words literally carved in stone, along with representations of the tools of the writer’s trade, including Rolfe’s favorite, his manual typewriter.
It includes a bronze 30-foot tower of books topped with a gold quill pen, as well as a large, abstract typewriter with keys that are big enough for children to stand on.
It is located in the plaza outside ImaginOn in Charlotte, North Carolina
