This map is from the Sociedad Geológica Mexicana (Mexican Geological Society). The society promotes academic discipline in geology and publishes the journal Boletín de la Sociedad Geológica Mexicana. The journals were established in 1904 by geologist Dr. José G. Aguilera, who served as the organization's first president. The journal is still published today (as of writing this the most recent is 2023). The society states that "Geology has no boundaries so we may publish papers on any area of knowledge that is interesting to our readers."

The map featured in the image predated the journals as it is from 1897. It was put online by the geological society. The map features important geological formations across Mexico and the surrounding area. The map makes use of color to indicate what formations are in each region. The map details what geological period each region is from and what kinds of rock make up the regions. The vibrant colors with a key to explain what each region helps visually communicate the terrain across the country.
