Canal Record Vol. 39 No. 2 (June 2005)

This periodical is for the Panama Canal Society, founded in 1932. The organization's tagline is “To preserve American Ideals and Canal Zone Friendships.” The Panama Canal had a zone controlled by the United States that extended 5 miles on the sides of the canal. The canal was turned over to the Panamanians on December 31, 1999.
The Panama Canal Society is comprised of former and current United States Government employees who were involved with the construction, operation, maintenance, or protection of the Panama Canal. According to information in the 2005 edition, the Canal Record is published quarterly in March, June, September, and December. The magazine features information about general meetings, dance classes, events, advertisements, travel tips, and member information (births, deaths, marriages). This organization helped to form a social group of the people and families that were involved with the construction of the Panama Canal. It creates an interesting grouping as it unifies former military and government employees with a shared country and culture they were introduced to through work. The publication is for an American Audience with some Panamanian influence and culture thrown into the mix. This society is still present today and hosts events, and reunions for its members.
