For the May 1903 issue of Harper's Bazar, a monthly publication from Harper & Brothers that catered to women's interest in fashion and luxury as well as the role of women in society at the time, the cover featured an Art Nouveau illustration with a woman holding a book open in her lap and making eye contact with the viewer. After the invention of chromo-lithography, magazines started to be printed in color, allowing for eye-catching covers.
