Evangelhos e Epístolas com suas Exposições em Romance

457

This religious text + commentary printed by Rodrigo Álvares of the “Gospels and epistles with their expositions in romance” is the Portuguese translation of the Spanish version by Gonçalo Garcia de Santa Maria.

Álvares, considered the "primeiro prototipógrafo português" (first portuguese proto-typographer), translated this text himself and printed it in the city of Porto in 1497. The influence of German typography can be seen in Álvares' work, especially in the use of Gothic Rotunda (http://tipografos.net/historia/alvares.html).

The text pictures detailed drop caps and engraved illustrations throughout “depicting scenes from the Gospels” (Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal).

This text is evidence of the growing transmission of knowledge into different languages due to the technology of printing.
