Stick Chart (Marshall Island)

784

Indigenous peoples of Micronesia designed stick charts, star maps and memory-based navigational techniques to traverse the vast Pacific Ocean long before European contact. These navigational systems allowed for migration, cultural exchange, and the survival of entire communities by helping them navigate vast distances with precision. This knowledge often protected indigenous communities from becoming subjugated by other powers, as they could find refuge or relocate.
