The Awakening

Featured in Puck Magazine during the Empire State Campaign, this map by Henry Mayer depicts Lady Liberty wearing a cape with the phrase "votes for women" printed on it. The map shows women in the east reaching out in search of suffrage. Lady Liberty walks toward them, reaching out to provide them a platform to express their power. The white portrayal of Lady Liberty draws attention to deeper themes in America, such as racism and feminist issues. Also included is a typeset poem by feminist Alice Duer Miller, further highlighting the need to have feminism represented across all genders to battle inequality. Through these design choices, this map is a valuable piece of graphic design history as it features early strategies of political conversation through art on numerous levels.
