The movie Friday the 13th is highly regarded for its significant impact on the horror genre, particularly in establishing the slasher film formula. Released in 1980, it introduced audiences to the suspenseful and gory style that would become a hallmark of ‘80s horror. The film’s isolated camp setting, creative kill sequences, and shocking twist ending made it stand out. Additionally, it laid the groundwork for the iconic villain Jason Voorhees, whose legacy would span numerous sequels and pop culture references. Its success helped cement Friday the 13th as a cornerstone of modern horror cinema.
The movie poster for Friday the 13th is well regarded for its striking simplicity and eerie atmosphere, capturing the essence of the film without giving too much away. The poster features a shadowy figure holding a knife, silhouetted against the night, with a group of camp counselors faintly visible in the background. This creates a sense of foreboding and mystery, drawing viewers in with the promise of terror. The bold red font of the title contrasts with the dark imagery, emphasizing danger. Its minimalist yet ominous design became iconic, perfectly aligning with the film’s suspenseful and slasher themes.

"There were two key parties that aided in the final poster design used in the marketing of the film. Spiros Angelikas was a designer as well as the owner of the firm, Spiros Associates. Mr. Angelikas designed the Friday the 13th illustration seen on the poster and his firm helped advertise Friday The 13th 1980.
Alex Ebel, an accomplished fantasy and science fiction illustrator, painted the final poster for Friday the 13th. Mr. Ebel was also involved in illustrations for a number of covers for genre books and magazines including Heavy Metal Magazine and the 1950's magazine Fantastic Stories Magazine. He also illustrated for World Book Encyclopedia."
