The World Map In My Cone Hat

From Vietnam, Nguyen Thi Phoung Anh was 12 years old when they created this image in 1995. It was submitted to the Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Drawing Competition for their 1995 competition and won an award for the age group Thi Phoung Anh was a part of. The competition is hosted through the International Cartographic Association. According to their website, “The aim of the contest is to promote the creative representation of the world in graphic form by children.”

The image pictures a person wearing a cone hat with the world drawn on in, along with lines of latitude and longitude. The flower petals on either side of the figures head are colored red, brown, white, yellow, and a grey which may have at one point been black.

This map is a wonderful example of a particular child's view of the world around them.  It is warm and welcoming and implies a sort of unity of the countries under one figure, a recurring image throughout winners of the competition.
