The sports schedule from the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games featured 6,797 men and 3,523 women. American women particularly excelled in these Games, benefiting from the support of Title IX, and won gold medals in gymnastics, soccer, softball, and basketball. This success propelled U.S. women athletes into the global spotlight and marked the beginning of their growing dominance in Olympic competition. The design of the informational graphic features some of these triumphant sports, such as soccer and basketball; however, the figures depicted in the graphic all seem to represent males. At this point, women had been competing in the Olympic Games since 1900. This is significant because, despite the clear success of female athletes, representation remains lacking. While women continue to persevere and establish their place in the Olympic Games, there is still an inequity in design representation.
