The Guerrilla Girl's “The Birth of Feminism” poster touches on topics of the patriarchy specifically within media and film. The poster was designed for an imaginary movie about the start of feminism but uses contemporary sex symbols to satirically address the sexualization of women in film.
The Guerrilla Girls were a group formed in 1985 that used art to advocate against sexism and racism during second and third wave feminism movements. Their art utilized design type, layouts and structures that communicated their political statements in a way that engaged audiences.
Within this poster, the Guerrilla Girls utilized big fonts, simple letterforms, and hierarchy to highlight important information and allow for easy legibility. The “Birth of Feminism” also demonstrates the role of popular culture and societal demand. During the time this poster was made, the role of media was extremely relevant and such topics became more accessible and shared upon higher demand. With this in mind, the poster's layout was inspired by film posters so as to draw attention to relevant political topics with a sense of irony and artistry that would spread the Guerrilla Girl's message farther and faster than other forms of media would be capable of.
