'Transcribus': A design tool uncovering Female Achievements

559

Jessica Sherrill (UCLA) has been working with the digital tool, ‘Transcribus’ to transcribe the texts of Ada Lovelace, an English mathematician whose footnotes contain early ideas of AI and generative algorithms. Lovelace's research was penned in the 19th century, but has been largely overlooked until now because of her female identity.

Sherrill's goal is to transcribe Lovelace's work from writing to digitized, legible text so that a wider population of people can learn and appreciate her contributions to the scientific world. Digital accessibility is an key facet to spreading awareness of marginalized groups' works and ideas.

Tools like ‘Transcribus’ utilize design to decipher and clarify text that is otherwise inaccessible to most people.
