Chrysanthemum: A First Day of School Book for Kids

850

In 1991, Kevin Henkes published Chrysanthemum, a children's book about a mouse named Chrysanthemum who goes to school for the first time and is faced with bullying about her name. The book focuses on kindness and compassion while encouraging young children to bond with their names. The book is reflective of a shifting culture towards viewing childhood as something that has to be nourished. Children, particularly young girls, have to learn to be kind.
