Pages from Manuel de Andrade de Figueiredo's treatise “Nova Escola para aprender a ler, escrever, e contar”

423

These pages from Andrade's treatise display his “exercise and praise of the letters”  and the unique orthography of the Portuguese language. His calligraphic illustrations and typography throughout the treatise display writing as a precise art, and held to the same level of importance as reading and mathematics.

This treatise was intended as teaching material, however, at this point in time, there was probably only a limited amount of people who had access to such resources, and therefore this noble art of writing was most likely not yet a widespread element of identity among people.
