IBM Electric Typewriter ad

This 1956 ad focuses on the fact that while the typewriter isn't “smart” enough to spell for you, it can make your work look great with ease due to it's electric power. Of course to the contemporary user of computers, this is charming as our machines absolutely do spell for us!

This machine offered proportional spacing for the type making it appear much closer to ‘printed’ type and therefore more professional than older typewriters.

It was very common to market typewriters to secretaries, as they were the people who used the machines and they were likely to be the ones who requested new ones from management.
