American graphic designer, illustrator, and co-founder of Push Pin Studios. The poster was designed as a response to the social and political climate of the 1960s. The late 1960s were a time of significant social upheaval, with widespread protest against the Vietnam War, civil rights movements, and a growing counterculture. Chwast’s poster uses the phrase “End Bad Breath” as a metaphor for silencing propaganda, lies, and harmful rhetoric prevalent during this era.
