On April 15, 1998, The Democratic Party of Japan unveiled its new logo, designed by Katsumi Asaba, who had designed the logo used prior to that date and is responsible for numerous advertising designs in Japan. The logo is still in use (2024). Katsumi Asaba himself explained his work as follows: "Two circles, two spheres. It is a symbol of the union of the 'power of the people. The circle and the sphere do not stand still. They move with the power of the people. It grows. Like a living organism, it grows, fuses, and creates new forms. The circle is also harmony. Talking and discussing with each other, they become one force. In its infinite form, the "power of the people" is integrated into crimson, showing the unlimited possibilities for the future. Naoto Kan, president of The Democratic Party of Japan in 1998, said, "When I first saw it, I was surprised because the bottom circle was hand-drawn, but in a way, it is a living shape. For example, a snow dharma is not round while it is being rolled, but it gets bigger and bigger as it is rolled.
