Disclaimer: ( This piece is a reproduction, I later found out that it was not an original. However, I think it is still valuable to keep up because of the uniqueness Studio 54 produced at the time due to its club culture and the designer who created the studio 54 photo. I mainly thought it was an original because I couldn’t find this exact piece like it was online when I did a reverse image search, just the logo.)
This Metal Memorabilia was from a place or area close to what was known as Studio 54. Studio 54 was a super infamous disco clubs in the 70s and 80s where all the most famous A list celebrities at the time partied every night. The studio club opened April 26th, 1977. Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager were the ones who owned and thought of all the interior and outer design of the actual studio club with the help of both an architect and graphic designer.
Those two people were Eugene De Rosa and Gilbert Lesser. Gilbert Lesser worked the most on movie poster and theatre design but had a very specific feel to his work using strong geometrical shapes and messing with shape. Gilbert produced other works like “Best Friend at Lyceum Theatre“ and “Poor Murder” which were two famous broadways posters of his. Lesser‘s work was famous and successful in terms of the audience it catered to. Despite how famous the logo is; not much is known about Gilbert Lesser and his work and much of his original work has still not been found.
I think it is important to remember Gilbert’s work because his work left an impact on geometric type design. This piece looks like it had some wear and tear. Overall thought, the shape and typographic style hold up well. it is still for the most part in pretty good shape despite it. This disco club was known for how elaborate and wild and many people still are looking for Studio 54 memorabilia. I hope this just shines a light on Gilbert Lessers contributions to helping make the Studio 54 design be timeless and something we can learn from and also have a look back at the disco era and insanity that came with it.
