Ancient Greek Curse Tablet

6

Curse tablets became popular in ancient Greece and Rome, from around 6th century B.C. to the late Roman Imperial period (284 AD – 641 AD.) Tablets such as this one were made with thinly pounded lead. Then, text would be scratched onto the surface. These curses could target one or more people.

The curse on this specific tablet refers to some sort of court matter, and wishes upon unsuccessful legal proceedings. The inscription was written in Doric, an ancient Greek Dialect.

The text says:

'As Oltis, being at/going to telos, was destroyed, so let Rhaton fruitlessly plead, him and Kelon/Kaikelon both in words and deeds in court. As, fruitless, Oltis was destroyed being at/going to telos, so let Myskelos fruitlessly in court, both in words and deed in court. As Oltis, fruitless, was destroyed, so let Lepton fruitlessly plead. Nothing be accomplished in court.
