“Black Light Series #6: Love Black Life”
In her Black Light Series painting Faith Ringgold displays the words, “Black”, “Love” and “Life” to create a powerful statement. Ringold was known as an icon in the Black Arts Movement. In a time of uncertainty between arts and race Ringold was said to have taken on the role as a feminist. Due to the many social changes during her years as an artist, her art reflected and shed light to this. She believed in growth, equality, stability and respect for women in the arts.
In this painting she displays these eye catching words, in a fan/windmill structure so it is readable at any angle. Each triangle carries one word that tapers inside of each shape. The color palette she chose is bold in some areas, yet subtle and dark in others. Overall Faith's piece exudes a positive, inspirational and affirmative message.
