The Beatles album titled,” Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” was released on May 26, 1967. Paul McCartney came up with the concept for the album cover, and commissioned Peter Blake and Jann Haworth to stage it. The cover depicts the Beatles in colorful costumes inspired by the uniforms of the British army, posing for a photograph with a crowd of famous actors, singers, comedians, writers, political and religious figures behind them. The drum skin positioned in the center in front of the Beatles was designed by Joe Ephgrave. This album cover is a display of the art and people which defined the era. John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Peter Blake, Jann Haworth, and Robert Fraser selected the popular figures they believed were most influential at that time. Each figure was made into a cardboard cutout so they could be included in the cover whether they were dead or alive, or even fictional, which was an innovative use of the technology available to them at the time. After the artwork was staged it was photographed by Michael Cooper. The album cover was groundbreaking, from the original concept to the cost it took to produce it, which was more than any popular album covers at the time, to the wide array of cultures it encompasses. The objects positioned within the composition hold significance for the interests of each individual Beatle. Many statues from their travels show the Beatles appreciation for different cultures, whose influence is prevalent in the music of the album. The album cover also incorporates more personal objects such as the swimming trophy positioned above the “L” in BEATLES, which was awarded to John Lennon as a child. Media’s influence on the Beatles was prevalent in objects such as a hookah, a device from India for smoking tobacco, which nodes to Lennon's love of Lewis Carrol, the caterpillar from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland who smokes out of a hookah, and a stone figure of snow white from Grimms Fairy Tales. This album cover is a unique representation of History and shows what it was like to design with the technology available in the 1960’s.
